Letter to the Editor

I took a class this semester Church & Social Justice. It discussed how the Catholic Church is committed to solving the problems society faces. Poverty, racism, and war. We did a project regarding causes that related to the class. Mine was on the homeless problem and how one organization The Siena-Francis House is working to combat it. We were encouraged to send a letter to either a Public official or to send a letter to the editor. I sent a letter to the editor and this is what I wrote.

Dear Sirs,
I'm a little perplexed today. I know as a society we don't like to look at the ugly things we seem to encounter on a daily basis. The homeless person we encounter walking down the street, the person who hasn't been to a dentist in so long all their teeth are gone. And yet, there are a very special group of people who work tirelessly to make sure the homeless are taken care of, the ones who work with and fund raise for the shelters and food bank. I am writing today to ask why the City of Omaha contributes more than $500,000 a year to the Nebraska Humane Society but the Siena-Francis House receives $100,000. Don't get me wrong. I love dogs and cats as much as the next person, but an organization like Siena-Francis House which provides a much needed service to the homeless population of Omaha. I don't understand why this would or should occur. The Siena-Francis House is the only shelter in Omaha which provides a daytime shelter. It is unacceptable to me that we are building a multi-million dollar baseball stadium not far from Siena-Francis House and the city sees fit to give a pittance to them when they are assisting people who are going through the lowest point of their lives. Thank you for your time, A Concerned Citizen Teresa A. Ballard

TO My Sisters and Brothers

To those in toxic relationships, Let me say one thing. When your significant other is beating you down with the seemingly harmless rhetoric they seem to spout whenever they wish, PLEASE remember this, think of the message they are sending your children. It says its ok to say harmful, hurtful things, things no human being should ever hear from someone who once claimed to love them. I know your self-esteem is taking that hit and you might even think hey I deserve this. NO-ONE deserves this. And know this, I wish for you peace, love and a much happier 2010. Peace

Friends

I'm the kind of person when I'm friends with someone, I know everything about them. It's the same for me. They know everything about me. In this day and age, do we really know everything about our friends ? Do we really want to ? We make friends on social networking sites, without ever having a face to face conversation. When did it change ? I just don't know ....

Sick of reality parents

Am I the only person who is sick to death of seeing parents use their children for their own gains ? The Balloon Boy hoax, Jon and Kate plus 8, Octomommy ? I do not understand what makes these parents tick. Are these parents really that self-absorbed that they use their children to get what they want out of their lives ? How about this, we leave our children out of the stupid decisions all of us parents make, and we do the things that we think will make our lives better for our families. Leave our children out of it. Thanks, Peace

My St. Louis Cardinals

They won the division by 11 games. I thought for sure they would win the World Series. Swept. I feel so drained and sad for my St. Louis Cardinals. Adam almost a 20 game winner. Carpenter coming back after being gone a year. The acquisitions of Holliday, DeRosa, Smoltzy. I am so disappointed right now.

What Do I Want ?

I was watching this movie and two of the characters were talking about their lives. One of the characters said "Be selfish. Think about yourself first, think what do I want " ? So I thought what do I want ? A Husband for me and a Dad for K. A lovely home, work I'm passionate about. Really, that's it ? Yeah, that is it. Peace

My Mission Statement

I was reading this article about having a mission statement. It lists your purpose in life, what are you dreaming of, what are your goals and how are you going to use your talents and abilities.
My mission statement would be my purpose in life is enabling my family to live within our means without having to go to extraordinary lengths to get more money coming in. My purpose in life is to enable my son to learn while he is young to manage his money so he doesn't make the same mistakes I have. And to teach him everything I know. What am I dreaming of ? My Husband and K's Dad being here with us and us being a happy family. We are a happy family now, but a few pieces are missing from the puzzle. What are my goals ? To have a career I absolutely adore, one where I am excited to go to work on a daily basis, one where I'm helping people. How am I going to use my talents and abilities, to listen to the people I come into contact with and not make judgements with our having all the information first. Peace

No, Chivalry is not Dead !

My friend H asked her listeners (she's a DJ on a popular radio station here) if chivalry was dead. She got a very good response answering in the negative ! No, Chivalry is not Dead ! I happen to LOVE it when a man opens a door for me, or holds a door open for me or on the seemingly rare occasion lately (sigh) walks around the car to open the door for me ! Thanks Peace

Don't Deny Who You Are

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us, it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." Nelson Mandela

The phrase I find most powerful is "Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you." Don't deny who you are to please another person. Denying yourself is like saying what I feel or say or think doesn't matter. It DOES matter ! Please remember that. Peace

When people show you who they are believe them

I saw that quote from the extremely wise woman, Dr. Maya Angelou. It says a lot. And not just in regards to men women relations, it means the same for your friends, whether they are men, women. I don't understand it when you are in a relationship, whatever it may be, and one person changes or maybe both people change. So then you wait for them to change back to the person they were. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't. I want for all men, women to know that quote. I believe it can help.

Fantastic Quote !

"The only life worth living is the one you're really passionate about ! " Glee

Living without passion in your life is akin to not really living, in my opinion. Find what you are passionate about and take steps to bring it into your life to what degree you can. Once you do that, all kinds of doors will open. Good Luck

Accountability

I was at the zoo yesterday with K and he was playing on a makeshift spiderweb. He was talking to another little boy and I have no idea what was said but they were getting ready to playfight. I said in a very loud voice, "No, Kane ! That is unacceptable !" The other child looked around at me and I said to him "You need to learn some manners." I looked around to see where his parents were and there was no-one around. I understand the need to let our children play unencumbered by us, but lets have some accountability when it comes to teaching children how to play. I should not have been the one to stop the two of them, his parents should have been close enough to intervene also.

Do You Know what I Love ?

I love when I call certain places, for example farms, a picture forms in my mind of old country farmhouses with oak trees draping over, the crickets chirping, a tire swing slowly moving back and forth in the breeze.

Reality

Reality is subjective. My reality is probably completely different than yours. Even though a world has been created that might or might not exist ? I couldn't resist wishing I could live there ! Not that the reality I live in now is awful. I just wanted more for my life. I knew exactly how to get it. Thanks

Motherhood

I am a single parent of a wonderful, challenging boy. I was watching a repeat of Oprah "The truth about Motherhood." Some of the things that were brought up in the show were things that I thought I was alone in thinking ! After watching the show I realized something. A friend had given me some advice a number of years ago while Kane was still small. "We do what we have to do to keep our kids happy and us sane." I knew consciously that some of the shortcuts that we Moms and Dads make may make us feel less than a perfect parent, but as long as its not harming our children, why not do it ? Do you really believe that your child is going to remember how many baths he or she took, or didn't take ? No what he or she will remember is the time they spent with you cuddling, reading a book on the couch or watching a video while cuddling on the couch. Thanks

I was wondering ...

I saw a man and a woman out on a date. They were walking into a restaurant. He was walking in front of her and I wondered, was he ever told that a gentleman walks around the car to open her door for her, assists her in exiting the car and then walks with her wherever they are going ? Its also nice when a man stands up when a woman enters or exits a room. Just an FYI. Thanks

Judgmental

To have certain judgements about things, situations or people is natural for some people, but to dislike someone so intensely at first sight and not even give them a chance to get to know the person they are is wrong. Even though I was raised that way, my son is NOT being raised that way.

Negativity

To have so much negativity in your life and yet remain hopeful and full of faith that your dreams will come true, that is the mark of a OPTIMISTIC person.

Post on 06-24-09

I thought to myself, Why am I listening to this same old tired discussion. The one where its brought up several times that not only can I not make a decision by myself but I also don't make any right decisions. Then it popped into my head. My current favorite quote
"Only those who attempt the absurd will achieve the impossible." MC Escher
All that negativity just faded away like balloons floating out of Memorial Stadium after Nebraska scores its first touchdown of the game.

Hi

Hi
